Dr. Cameron Webb announced Wednesday (Aug. 7) that he has entered the 2020 race to represent Virginia\u2019s 5th<\/sup>Congressional District.<\/p>\n In challenging current Rep. Denver Riggleman (R-Nellysford), Webb seeks to make Washington work for the people of Virginia by focusing on improving access to affordable healthcare.<\/p>\n \u201cThe people have spoken and ensuring access to affordable, quality healthcare should be Washington\u2019s top priority,\u201d said Webb. \u201cBut instead, too many politicians are spending more time trying to prove each other wrong than trying to help the people they have been elected to serve.<\/p>\n \u201cThat constant putting politics over patients \u2013 that\u2019s what\u2019s wrong. I\u2019m ready to go to Washington to be a leading voice on behalf of patients and actually get something done. As a doctor, I\u2019ve seen firsthand how inadequate health care hurts families. I\u2019ve seen how health is shaped in spaces well beyond the exam room through issues like employment, education, and even the environment. I\u2019m running because it is urgent that we prioritize taking common sense steps to improve the health and well-being of all Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n In the coming weeks Webb will travel the district meeting voters and getting to know more about the challenges families are facing and what he can do to help.<\/p>\n \u201cAs any scientist will tell you, before you can solve a problem you have to start with collecting data. I look forward to visiting with folks all over the district to hear from them what\u2019s working and \u2013 more importantly \u2013 what isn\u2019t in their lives,\u201d Webb said.<\/p>\n Webb grew up in Spotsylvania along with his five siblings. His mother, a public school speech therapist, and father, a human resources manager with the DEA, taught Webb to take an active role in his community and serve others \u2013 lessons he carries with him today.<\/p>\n After graduating from the University of Virginia (U.Va.) and getting his medical and law degrees, Webb was tapped by President Obama for the White House Fellowship. In his time in the Obama administration, he was the only medical doctor on the White House Health Care Team and also worked on Obama\u2019s My Brother\u2019s Keeper Initiative, where he helped tackle issues in education, workforce development and criminal justice reform.<\/p>\n A practicing physician, Webb returned to Charlottesville where he treats patients as a general internist, teaches undergraduate and graduate students and serves as the director of health policy and equity at U.Va.\u2019s School of Medicine. His wife, Dr. Leigh-Ann Webb, is an emergency room doctor who grew up in Appomattox County. They live in Albemarle County where they raise their two children, Avery and Lennox.<\/p>\n Webb joins two other candidates, Kim Daugherty and Roger Dean Huffstetler, in the contest to win the Democratic nomination.
